Just back from the Sloan C Emerging Technology for Online Education (ET4ONLINE, or #et4online on Twitter) in San Jose. It was a gorgeous time to be in San Jose, although a little hot for us East Bay-ers. :)

Article: Using social networking to reach at-risk students

Some school districts are using social networking sites to reach out to high school students who are at risk of not graduating. This story follows a graduation success coordinator at Everett School District in WA who contacts students on Facebook and MySpace to convince them to finish their degrees. This is one of many efforts the district has made that has resulted in overall district graduation rates improving from 53% in 2003 to 90% in 2009.

Study: Link between social network use and academic performance hard to establish

A Northwestern University study found no link between increased or decreased academic performance based on use of social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace. The researchers suggest that there is no inherent benefit or detriment to students that use these sites; they may visit such sites to goof off or to connect with classmates. Hey Everyone!

Thanks to everyone who attended the 2010 Symposium for Next Generation Teaching and Learning. It was a jam-packed day of great speakers and panelists. We had a great turnout and lots of discussion! Thanks also to everyone who filled out of symposium survey (http://bit.ly/SymposiumEvaluation) in order to help make this event even better for next year.

Registration is up for the 2010 Symposium. Register here. Tickets ar $25 for students and $50 for non-students, and include breakfast, lunch, and a tasty reception. Those traveling from out of town do not pay a registration fee in order to offset any travel costs.

Panel at the iSchools Conference on NGTL

We traveled to not-so-sunny Urbana-Champaign, IL in early February to present a panel at the iSchools conference with several other NGTL representatives. Come and join us in Berkeley for the NGTL Symposium 2010! This is our first year and it promises to be exciting! We are pleased to announce that Howard Rheingold, Dean Christopher Edley, and Gordon Freedman will be the keynote speakers. Welcome to the website for the 2010 Symposium on Next Generation Teaching and Learning. This is the first event sponsored by the Center for Next Generation Teaching and Learning, and will be held at Berkeley Law School's Boalt Hall (room 110), in Berkeley, California, on Saturday, April 17.

The NGTL Symposium is an event to share some of the trends and changes in emerging technology to support student-centered teaching and learning. Participants and speakers from a number of channels within academia, industry, standards bodies, and educational institutions will converge for one day to facilitate innovation and collaboration.
